Payet, 29, posted a picture on Twitter of a private jet, captioned: "Back to home."

Marseille stepped up their pursuit for the midfielder after he told Irons boss Slaven Bilic he no longer wanted to play for the Premier League side.

Following his refusal to play, Payet brought in 24-hour protection after fans egged his home.

Marseille initially had three bids rejected for the playmaker but they are set to welcome him back to the club after he departed for West Ham in 2015.

The midfielder made 72 appearances during his two year spell at Marseille before moving to England.

And last February he signed a new five-and-a-half year deal after becoming West Ham's talisman.

As well as no longer wanting to play for the first team at West Ham, Payet also refused to play for the Under-23s as he did not want to risk an injury which would put a move to Marseille in doubt.

Payet's imminent departure comes just two days after the Irons signed winger Robert Snodgrass from Hull for a fee of £10million.

Snodgrass signed a three-and-a-half year deal and is seen as a like for like replacement for Payet after scoring seven goals and providing three assists in 20 Premier League games this season.
