In order to triumph, Mikel Arteta's side needed a seemingly unlikely favour from the Hammers.

But even the most pessimistic of Gooners must have hoped the fantasy would last longer than one minute.

When Phil Foden banged one into the top corner moments after kick-off, Arsenal fans around the Emirates were crushed.

During the TNT Sports broadcast, an Arsenal fan could be seen showing those around him on his phone that City had scored.

A third instantly gave up, saying: "We'll try again next season."

And another added: "Foden is looking for blood."

'They took it away from us... next year we'll be even more determined', says Arteta after Arsenal title heartbreak

Things quickly went from bad to worse for the Gunners, as Foden added a second on just 18 minutes.

The England superstar, 23, swept home Jeremy Doku's pass to double his side's lead.

Then, on the stroke of half time, Arsenal's misery was compounded when they went 1-0 down at home to Everton.

Idrissa Gueye's free-kick took a huge deflection off Declan Rice before flying past the wrong-footed David Raya on 40 minutes.

The goal prompted many gutted Gooners to head into the concourse for half-time early.

Those that did head in early, however, will have missed their side's equaliser.

Takehiro Tomiyasu converted beyond Jordan Pickford to make it 1-1.

Then there was news from Manchester, as West Ham grabbed an unlikely lifeline, courtesy of Mohammed Kudus' acrobatic bicycle kick.

Arsenal's five key moments this season

A look at five of the key moments in Arsenal's title challenge...

  • Arsenal 1 - 0 Man City: Arsenal beat Manchester City at the Emirates in dramatic fashion early in the season to give them belief that they could compete for the title once again.
  • Arsenal 5 - 0 Crystal Palace: The Gunners bounce back from a run of five games with only one victory by smashing the Eagles. The win kick-starts a spell of seven consecutive wins in which they scored 33 goals and conceded just four.
  • Arsenal 3 - 1 Liverpool: A huge victory against a then title challenger in Liverpool pushed Arsenal within touching distance of the top of the table.
  • Man City 0 - 0 Arsenal: A goalless draw meant things stayed the same in the title race and Arsenal were able to keep pace with their competitors.
  • Spurs 2 - 3 Arsenal: Arsenal blew away their fiercest rival in the first half before digging in to prevent a second half comeback - the Gunners were a matter of games away from winning the league as a result.

However, any fleeting hopes were soon extinguished when Rodri swept beyond Alphonse Areola to restore City's two-goal cushion, prompting jubilant scenes at the Etihad... and more Emirates misery.
