WAYNE ROONEY went full John Terry as he lifted the EFL Cup in his Manchester United kit despite not playing in the final.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the winner as skipper Roo was about to come on - leading Jose Mourinho to use Marouane Fellani instead.

But Rooney took his place on the podium to collect the trophy - just as Mourinho promised  - in echoes of JT in 2012.

The Chelsea skipper wore his full kit to lift the Champions League in 2012 and changed from his suit despite not being part of the squad.

It was a bittersweet moment for Rooney, who could well be playing out his last season at Old Trafford.

There were rumours that the England striker could be set for a mega-money switch to the Chinese Super League – but he snubbed that offer as he “wants to remain in the Premier League”.

But after it was revealed Everton came in for their former player in the January transfer window, a move back to Goodison Park cannot be ruled out for the summer.

And today’s latest blow could well have made up Rooney’s mind that he will move on after breaking Bobby Charlton’s goalscoring record at United.
