Who is BBC commentator Steve Cram?

Stephen Cram, CBE is a British retired track and field athlete.

Born October 14, 1960, Stephan was nicknamed "The Jarrow Arrow" after his home town, Jarrow in South Tyneside.

As an athlete his career was forged alongside Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett to form a period of unprecedented success in British athletics.

The former track star was the first man to run 1500m in under three minutes and 30 seconds.

He won the 1500m gold medal at the 1983 World Championships, and a year later he snapped up the 1500m silver medal at the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Cram also held the mile record with his time of 3:46.32 in the Dream Mile in Oslo, in July 1985.

After holding the record for 38 years, Josh Kerr beat Crams time by less than a minute, losing him the impressive world champion title he had held for over three decades.

Cram is the co-founder and chairman of an international children’s charity called COCO (Comrades of Children Overseas).

COCO provide sustainable education to children living in poverty in parts of East Africa.

Following the death of his younger brother Kevin in 2001, the international athlete teamed up with Reebok to launch the CramAlert ID wristband in memory of his brother - who was not identified for days after his death.

The system allows people to be quickly identified in an emergency, whether home or abroad, thanks to a call centre which holds the wearer's personal details.

Steve is now a BBC television presenter, athletics commentator, motivational speaker and athletics coach.

In 2021, he was elected the new president of the British Orienteering Federation.

When did BBC commentator Steve Cram retire?

The BBC Sport commentator retired from athletics in 1994.

Since retiring, Steve has coached athletes, Laura Weightman, Thomas Lancashire, Ross Murray and his current partner.

Cram has also made a successful career for himself as a television pundit.

He first started commentating with Eurosport, and then with Channel 4 before joining the BBC as the Chief Athletics Commentator.

Steve has co-presented both the Summer and Winter Olympics since Sydney 2000.

The former Olympic runner is in the commentary box for the BBC for the Paris 2024 Games.

The sports pundit shares two children, Josie and Marcus, with his ex-wife Karen.

Allison Curbishley is a former British athlete who specialised in the 400m sprint.

Born June 3, 1976, Curbishley grew up in Stockton-on-Tees but went on represent Great Britain as well as Scotland, in the world of sport.

She picked up two gold medals for Team GB in the European U23 Championships of 1997 in Turki, Finland.

During her career, her knee was operated on six times, and the injury finally led to her retirement in 2003.

The gold medallist is now working for the BBC.

In 2002 she was coached by former world champion Steve Cram.

The two began a relationship and have been partners ever since.

The couple now live in Northumberland.
