Borussia Dortmund vs Aston Villa preview

Aston Villa conclude their pre-season at Borussia Dortmund, last season's Champions League finalists.

And manager Unai Emery will aim to finalise preparations for the season opener against West Ham at the London Stadium.

Villa, entering the Champions League for the first time after a fourth-place finish, have spent around £150 million on eight new signings, including Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen — which is more than any other Premier League club.

Their pre-season has been mixed, with back-to-back 3-0 wins over Walsall and Trnava, followed by three losses to Columbus Crew, RB Leipzig, and Club America.

They recently secured a 3-2 victory over Athletic Bilbao and will seek to build momentum against Dortmund, who drew 2-2 with Villarreal earlier this week.

I'm quite surprised to see Aston Villa enter this contest as 11/4 underdogs with the bookmakers. Unai Emery has spent the majority of pre-season chopping and changing his starting XI - with 10 or 11 substitutions in each contest. I expect the Villans to field their strongest XI from the off ahead of their clash with West Ham, while Nuri Sahin's side aren't as advanced in their pre-season campaign and don't make their Bundesliga bow until the 24th August.
