Ashley Cole named England assistant manager under Lee Carsley as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink leaves Three Lions role
Former Prem star also steps up alongside Cole to form the new-look England coaching staff
ASHLEY COLE has been named as Lee Carsley’s assistant for his spell as interim England manager.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who had been part of the Three Lions’ coaching setup since March 2023, will be leaving his role.
Former U21 boss Carsley was appointed to replace Southgate on a temporary basis following his exit after the Euros this summer.
Southgate quit two days after England were beaten 2-1 by Spain in the final of Euro 2024, with his assistant Steve Holland also departing.
Carsley will be in the dugout when England face the Republic of Ireland away and Finland at home in the Nations League next month.
But the FA have now confirmed that Chelsea icon Cole will step up to become his senior-team assistant.
Cole, 43, became Carsley’s U21s assistant in July 2021 and combined his duties with his role at Chelsea’s academy.
The former Premier League full-back then followed Frank Lampard for a year at Everton, before joining Wayne Rooney’s staff at Birmingham – again short-lived.
Birmingham kept him as a first-team coach following Rooney’s sacking after 15 games, and the club were eventually relegated to League One last season.
Cole was capped by England on 107 occasions between 2001 and 2014 and played five major tournaments as his nation’s sixth most-capped male player.

Former England and Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott will also form part of Carsley’s coaching staff.
Lescott played 26 times for England between 2007 and 2013.
Both Cole and Lescott worked with Carsley as England won the U21 European Championship last year.
Tim Dittmer, the FA’s head of coaching, will also be part of the setup.
Dittmer was a national goalkeeping coach most notably with the U21s.
Ben Futcher, who previously managed the ELS squad, replaces Carsley on an interim basis as U-21s boss.
Futcher will be helped by former Manchester United academy coach Tom Huddlestone.
