McNulty, 26, won the first stage but came off his bike and was hurt after a fall.
The American fell over the barrier and down a ravine after the crash.
He was able to get up and climb to safety but was left covered in blood.
Security staff could be seen rushing to the accident to help the Team UAE Emirates star.
McNulty could be seen checking his face, which was left very cut up.
The spot had proven to be a tricky one as McNulty’s team-mate Jay Vine also crashed in the same place.
As a result, McNulty’s chances of winning the stage ended as Michael Woods of Israel-Premier Tech won.
The Canadian broke away from the pack in the final 5km to finish in first place.
McNulty did manage to get back on his bike and complete the stage.
