The lucrative splashing of cash has not materialised into on-pitch success as Chelsea finished 12th in the Premier League in their first campaign under American ownership - and sixth last season.

But one table they are topping is that of the most expensively assembled squad in the world when it comes to cumulative transfer fees.

According to the , Chelsea are the only squad that has was put together for more than £1bn.

Their players are understood to have cost £1.06bn, a long way clear of second-place Manchester United on £874million.

They are joined by three more Premier League clubs in the top five, with English football dominating the top of the list.

Manchester City (£856m), Arsenal (£672m) and Tottenham (£663m) sit ahead of the first non-English club, Paris Saint-Germain (£650m).

Liverpool sit seventh (£619m), with European champions Real Madrid down in eighth on £606m - little more than half the expenditure of Chelsea.

That is despite Los Blancos possessing superstars such as Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior.
