'I couldn't let my guard down'
Xiao Guodong pulled off one of the shocks of the day to beat world No 2 Kyren Wilson on Tuesday and set up a clash with Barry Hawkins.
Xiao Guodong said: "Kyren is ranked number two in the world and became World Champion this year so I kept a clear head and reminded myself to be patient for my chances.
"Whether I was leading or trailing, I couldn’t let my guard down,
"When I compete in China, I really want to win. Having fans and my family in the audience makes me want to show my best.
"Thankfully I managed to get the result today."
Local Long
Long Zehuang faces Ben Woollaston on Wednesday and revealed he was feeling "particularly nervous" given he grew up in Wuhan.
He said: "I felt particularly nervous today because my family was watching.
"I’m from Wuhan and my wife and child were also here too. Maybe that brought me good luck today, as it is very rare for my family to watch me play.
"My child was born this year and is now eight months old. My wife has been taking care of everything at home.
"She is incredibly supportive of me and my entire family is behind me.
"Without their support, I might have already given up."
Shocks in Wuhan
There have been a handful of big shocks already in this one but not many at the start of the week would have put cash on Duane Jones and Mark Joyce reaching the last 16.
Welshman Jones is currently ranked No 102 in the world but put on a superb show to beat world No 26 Pang Junxu in a 5-4 thriller.
He had only won £11,000 of prize money this season so far, but has guaranteed himself at least another £12,000 this week alone.
Jones will now be hoping to pull off another shock against another local player in Si Jiahui, who has been in excellent form this season and looked very comfortable in a 5-1 win over Martin O'Donnell.
Wildcard week
Mark Joyce pips Duane Jones to the biggest shock of the week, however, as he was only a late replacement for Ronnie O'Sullivan.
Joyce, 41, has not been ranked in the top 30 in the world since November 2014 - when he reached his highest ranking of 29 - and has won zero prize money so far this season, essentially making him an amateur.
But he is taking his chance in Wuhan and scored an impressive win over Sanderson Lam before whitewashing Robbie Williams earlier on Tuesday.
Like Duane Jones, Joyce has guaranteed himself at least £12,000 as he faces a tough test against China's No 2 player, Zhang Anda.
Ding hoping for hometown glory
Ding Junhui remains China's most popular player but it has been a while since his fans saw their favourite lift any silverware.
Ding, the current world No 9, has been unable to get over the hump in the last few years, with his last ranking title coming in 2019 at the UK Championship.
He has been to three finals since, losing the UK Championship in 2022 and 2023, before almost winning the World Open on home soil earlier this year, before falling to Judd Trump.
Ding faces Chris Wakelin on Wednesday hoping to take another step towards a final and ending his long wait.
Carter relishing Murphy
Ali Carter has been in a bit of a slump in recent weeks but was buzzing with his win over Marco Fu, which set up that clash with Shaun Murphy.
The Captain said: "Marco always scores really heavily. I’m delighted to get through that game.
"Wins have been a bit dry of late. I’ve come here with not a lot of expectation or confidence. It is nice to get a couple of wins.
"Shaun is a top player and I’ve known him forever. I need to keep reminding myself I’m a top player as well.
"It is good to be competing against the top boys, that is where I want to be, it is my job and I’m thoroughly looking forward to it tomorrow."
Murphy vs Carter - head to head
Shaun Murphy and Ali Carter's meetings have not been quite so dramatic or high stakes as Trump and Higgins, but they have played each other 37 times and met in two finals over the years.
That includes their last meeting, in the final of the 2023 Players Championship, which Murphy won 10-4.
However, Ali Carter has had the better of his fellow Essex boy over the years, winning 21 of their 37 matches to Murphy's 14.
