Rhodes, 39, competed in the main event at the State Farm Arena in Georgia as he teamed up with former foe Roman Reigns to beat Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu of The Bloodline.

But after picking up the win, the American fell victim to a backstage assault from Owens who blindsided him and pummelled him with a series of punches as well as kicks.

The whole incident took place in front of a handful of fans while WWE personnel tried to pull KO away from the fallen world champion.

Shock footage surfaced online and WWE legend and current chief Triple H revealed it will be handled behind the scenes.

Another added: "One of the most creative things you’ve ever done. Bravo."
