It would take a miracle for David Moyes’ flops to beat the Premier League drop as they lay seven points from safety with ten matches to go.
A Hammers source said: “We remain interested in Jermain after trying to sign him in January.
“He’s 34 but his call up for England tells you everything you need to know. We want to discover where he stands on the contract.
“We believe it’s a free if they go down. Although his wages are high it would be a good deal for us.
“We think he would love to finish his days at the club that groomed him. We will have a good look at him on April 15 when we are up there.”
Defoe has been in sensational form this season, bagging 14 of Sunderland’s 24 goals and two assists.
He started his career with the Hammers before moving to Spurs, Portsmouth and Canadian side Toronto FC.
The forward was brought back into the England fold this week after a shock call-up by boss Gareth Southgate.
The Three Lions face Germany in Dortmund on Wednesday and Lithuania on Sunday at Wembley.
Defoe has scored an incredible 33 goals in 78 appearances for Sunderland after joining them in 2015.
