There will be a new champion crowned this year after Gary Wilson went crashing out in the first round, while world champ Kyren Wilson was knocked out after losing 4-2 to Stephen Maguire on Wednesday night.

However, Luca Brecel pulled off an incredible comeback to beat Ding Junhui before Mark Allen booked his last-8 spot with a marginal win over Jack Lisowski.

  • Latest scores – Ali 87 cuts Noppon lead to one!

Carter missed a ton break as he missed on 87.

But that's two flowing frames in a row - this one at quickfire speed.

    • Lei Peifan 2-3 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 2-3 Noppon Saengkham (frame score: 87-3)
  • Latest scores – Another Carter half-century

Carter looks a totally different player - albeit he's finally been given a decent innings or two at the table.

And with the balls so well placed, a century is possible.

    • Lei Peifan 2-3 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 1-3 Noppon Saengkham (72-3)
  • Latest scores – Ali giving himself hope

Saengkham took on one of the most difficult long reds you'll see - mainly because nothing else was on.

He missed - and got lucky with where the cue ball landed.

But Carter nonetheless returned for a useful mini-break.

    • Lei Peifan 2-3 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 1-3 Noppon Saengkham (11-3)

  • Latest scores – expert safety shot

Saengkham followed a fine long red with an expert safety shot.

Carter matched the quality of that defensive shot with his next table visit.

And this is a high-class phase of safety play.

    • Lei Peifan 2-3 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 1-3 Noppon Saengkham (0-3)
  • Latest scores – Ali bags frame

Carter took out a great red - now that's he's playing with such abandon.

The following blue made the frame safe.

And if he keeps up that form he has a gimmer of a chance - just a glimmer - of a major comeback.

    • Lei Peifan 1-3 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 1-3 Noppon Saengkham (frame score: 74-4)
  • Latest scores – Carter bags 65

Carter has come alive, taking advantage of an early opportunity.

He couldn't have been outplayed more than in the previous two frames as he trails 3-0.

However, he bowed out of his 65 break by missing a simple red to the bottom right pocket.

And in this mood Saengkham could REALLY have made him pay - but Carter breathed a sigh of relief as the Thai ace only knocked in two.

    • Lei Peifan 1-3 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 0-3 Noppon Saengkham (65-4)
  • Latest scores – Noppon sails one frame from victory

Needless to say - mention the possibility of a century and the chance disappears two pots later.

Saengkham had to settle for a 79 break and what feels like as convincing a 3-0 lead as it's possible to hold.

Aand on the other table Bingham too is now one frame from victory.

    • Lei Peifan 1-3 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 0-3 Noppon Saengkham (frame score: 10-79)
  • Latest scores – Ali reduced to watching brief

    Saengkham appears unstoppable.

All the remaining reds - bar one on the right cushion - are well placed.

And Carter now needs snookers after his opponent's latest half-century.

    Another ton incoming?

    • Lei Peifan 1-3 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 0-2 Noppon Saengkham (10-73)
  • Latest scores – Noppon cruising again

Saengkham is crafting a brilliant break.

One red as he perched with the rest over the pack, then another one drilled into a baulk-end pocket, enabled him to keep on track.

    • Lei Peifan 1-2 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 0-2 Noppon Saengkham (0-26)
This brilliant long red has left Saengkham scenting another sizeable break

  • Latest scores – On-song Saengkham bags 120 clearance

Saengkham will be a realistic title contender on this form.

His 120 clearance was pretty much peerless as he doubled his match lead.

And unless there's a major change in fortunes from BOTH players the Thai ace will be heavy favourite to bag the two further frames needed for victory.

    • Lei Peifan 1-2 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 0-2 Noppon Saengkham (frame score: 12-120)

    • Ali Carter 0-1 Noppon Saengkham (12-69)
  • Latest scores – Bingham comes from behind to lead

Saengkham looks in command of the table.

And a half-century looks the minimum he'll achieve with this table visit

    • Lei Peifan 1-2 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 0-1 Noppon Saengkham (12-46)
  • Latest scores – Carter struggling to find rhythm

Carter looked decidedly erratic in that opening frame.

He built an early lead in this second frame but Saengkham has overhauled him.

    • Lei Peifan 1-1 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 0-1 Noppon Saengkham (12-22)
  • Latest scores – Noppon takes lead

Saengkham was pretty lethal whereas Carter was wasteful in their opening frame.

The Thai star missed the black at the end but made no real mistakes.

    • Lei Peifan 1-1 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 0-1 Noppon Saengkham (frame score: 14-78)
  • Latest scores - Saengkham soaring

Saengkham strode to a 51-point lead before Carter finally got his first decent opportunity.

Saengkham will surely finish this frame off now

    • Lei Peifan 1-1 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 0-0 Noppon Saengkham (14-60)
  • Latest scores

Saengkham erred, letting in Carter for an easy red from which he smashed open the pack.

But Carter them missed he very next pot, a straight yellow.

So Saengkham returned in an inviting position.

    • Lei Peifan 1-0 Stuart Bingham
    • Ali Carter 0-0 Noppon Saengkham (0-0)
  • Did Nopp want a nap?!

Noppon Saengkham revealed he was "tired" at the climax of his marvellous midnight victory over Mark Selby last night/this morning.

But the 32-year-old joked his age advantage over the four-time world champ, 41, might have made him slighter the fresher of the two.

Now he has to be alert all over again against Ali Carter - although he has beaten the Englishman in their two previous two encounters

  • Latest scores - Lei off to a flier

Lei Peifan zoomed 1-0 up against Stuart Bingham.

And on the main table, Noppon Saengkham and Ali Carter are preparing to get under way.

Saengkham was up until past 12.30 this morning as he edged out Mark Selby 4-3.

Could we be in for another late-night marathon?

  • Winner Allen explains why it's tough playing Jack

Mark Allen edged out Jack Lisowski 4-3 but revealed it's tough playing a flair player he loves watching.

Allen told Eurosport: "I thought it was a good game.

"There were a few misses but I thought it was good. It's always a tough game against Jack.

"He plays some unbelievable snooker and you think 'how did he do that?'. But then he misses one or two you wouldn't expect him to."

  • Tonight's late matches...

Stuart Bingham's last-16 contest with Lei Peifan has started.

Noppon Saengkham v Ali Carter will follow soon.

    • Lei Peifan 0-0 v Stuart Bingham
    • Noppon Saengkham v Ali Carter
  • Latest scores – Allen wins nailbiter!

Lisowski was hanging on in the match - after Allen missed a red when on 68.

But the English ace needed one snooker plus all the reds and blacks possible to just tie - and go to a sudden-death black

And when Lisowski left three reds near a hole he conceded.

That's six wins in a row for Allen over a rival whose attacking style he admires.

    • RESULT: Mark Allen 4-3 Jack Lisowski
  • Latest scores – Allen imperious so far in decider

Allen has taken his time with what looks a meticulous, match-defining break.

Lisowski appears to be paying a big price for missing a tough red.

Now Allen has passed a half-century and Lisowski needs snookers.

    • Mark Allen 3-3 Jack Lisowski (62-14)
  • Latest scores – Allen looking to build key break

Allen blew the chance of an early snooker in the deciding frame.

And so far Lisowski holds a marginal lead in a cautious start to the deciding frame.

He then bagged a surprising red - and with the resulting blue he then smashed the reds wide open.

But unluckily there was no easy potting option - and he missed a risky red.

So instead it's Allen who is in with a dangerous opportunity.

    • Mark Allen 3-3 Jack Lisowski (7-14)
