When he took it out blood was pouring and a chunk - including his fingernail - had come off completely.

In gruesome scenes, Australian jock Orman, who has almost 1,300 career wins, was rushed to hospital carrying part of his right hand.

After being examined by doctors and undergoing x-rays, it was confirmed the top of his digit could not be put back on.

A post updating punters on the jockey's progress read: "Update on James Orman after Prince Of Boom got him.

"Tip of his finger can’t be re-attached but he’s having flap surgery on it to put the skin over the missing part.

"He’s also got a fractured distal phalanx. Won’t be out long and it will heal fine."

Orman is targeting a speedy return to action - although he can't quite put his finger on when.

He said: "I’ll know after surgery when I’ll be back but would say that I’ll be back pretty soon."
