Reds bosses will now have to decide whether to keep Alexander-Arnold until the end of the season before losing him on a free transfer.
Or whether to cash in next month to at least get something for their homegrown star.
Real Madrid are said to be relaxed about the situation; willing to wait until the end of the season but also open to a cut-price January swoop.
They have done similar free transfer deals in recent years with the likes of David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger and most recently Kylian Mbappe.
