One of the Gulf state’s most powerful figures fuelled the story by posting a picture of Salah wearing an Al-Hilal shirt.

Done deal - Philogene to Ipswich
Ipswich have announced the £20million capture of Jaden Philogene from Aston Villa.
The winger has penned a four-and-a-half-year deal at Portman Road.
Philogene told the club website: "I’m excited to be here and I know there are great players in the squad.
"I just want to play as much as possible. As a player I like to dribble and link up play and provide goals and assists. I’m looking forward to it."
Pereira - 'I don't need Lemina'
Wolves boss Vitor Pereira has savaged Mario Lemina for backing out of Wednesday's 3-0 loss to Newcastle.
Report suggest the Wolves reigning player of the season is targeting a big-money move to Saudi Arabia.
Pereira raged: "I cannot bring a player who tells me he is not in the mental condition to help the team. With this commitment, I cannot bring him.
"If a player comes to me and says ‘I’m not in conditions mentally to help the team’ this is something that the club must solve. He wants to leave.
"I don't know what happened before me, but with this energy and this mentality, I don't need him. I prefer to play with another player."
Dusan denied
Juventus manager Thiago Motta has refused to comment on the future of striker Dusan Vlahovic.
The Serbian has been linked with a January switch to Arsenal.
He missed Monday night's 1-1 draw with Atalanta, with the club insisting he has a knock.
Motta said: "I do not talk about the transfer market.
"Dusan is recovering, he is not at 100 per cent and we cannot risk losing him for longer, so we’ll see what happens over the next three days."
At the double
Newcastle are considering an offer of around £11m from Atlanta United for Miguel Almiron.
The Paraguayan played for the MLS club for three years prior to his arrival at St James Park.
Almiron has fallen down the pecking order at Toon and hasn’t scored since December 2023.
According to David Ornstein, the two clubs are in "advanced talks."
Mag-nificent
Harry Maguire's return to top form looks set to save Manchester United a whopping £70million.
The 31-year-old has impressed since the arrival of Ruben Amorim and the club have triggered a one-year extension in his contract.
Maguire's £190,000-a-week deal was going to expire at the end of this season and he had been expected to leave.
But United's U-turn on his future means they no longer need to spend big on a replacement.
The Mail report that the Red Devils were targeting a "ready-made" defender in the summer.
In the red
Prem clubs are bracing themselves for Manchester United to put the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford on the market.
According to The Telegraph, United's rivals believe part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe will put homegrown talent up for sale to stay within financial rules.
That would mean Rashford, Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho would be at risk of being sold by the Old Trafford board.
It was announced today that all 20 Premier League clubs avoided charges over profit and sustainability rules (PSR) for the 2023-24 campaign.
But United’s financial losses mean they give themselves little room for manoeuvre without Champions League football next season.
Zub done
Arsenal have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi at the end of the season.
The midfielder has been targeted by several top Premier League clubs in recent months.

But the loan deal included a recall clause - and the Blues have activated it with a growing injury list in defence.
New Forest
West Ham have opened discussions with Nottingham Forest about signing Taiwo Awoniyi on loan.
The out-of-favour striker has been unable to oust red-hot Chris Wood from the starting XI.
According to The Times, the Hammers are keen to thrash out a temporary deal for Awoniyi.
The striker netted ten Premier League goals to help Forest stay up in 2022/23, but has just 7 goals in 36 matches since.
Mo approach

Salah’s public comments about his "last season" at Anfield have increased doubts over his wish to sign a new deal.
Ant on the move
Man Utd are holding talks with several clubs to offload Antony, reports suggest.
The winger joined United from Ajax in 2022 following a staggering £85million deal.
Antony has never lived up to expectations and has managed a mere 12 goals and five assists in 94 appearances.
According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils are talking to numerous teams over a potential loan deal this month.
Among those clubs is Real Betis who are in the market for a winger having just sold Assane Diao to ambitious Como.

Arsenal have been offered Kingsley Coman, according to reports.
The Gunners lost Gabriel Jesus to a season-ending injury against Manchester United at the weekend.

But the Gunners are wary due to his "expensive" fee and wage demands.

Liverpool have 'obvious' Salah replacement
Former Red Danny Murphy believes Liverpool should sign Real Madrid star Rodrygo if Mo Salah leaves.
He told : “If Liverpool wanted one player to replace Mohamed Salah, the obvious choice for me would be Rodrygo from Real Madrid. I think he's a wonderful talent.
“I don't know what his contract situation is in Madrid, but I think of him because we’ve seeing him play at the highest level and winning Champions Leagues in the last couple of years.
“His numbers aren't like Salah's but he's a match winner. He can beat people, he's quick, he's playing in an environment where he's playing under huge pressure every week and dealing with it.
“Additionally they've got so many talented players at Real Madrid that maybe there is room for one of them to leave. So that would be the obvious standout for me.”
