‘For the first time in 41 years, I can hear’ says MMA legend in emotional post having been UFC’s first-ever deaf fighter
THE UFC'S first-ever deaf fighter Matt Hamill emotionally revealed that he is now able to hear.
Hamill has been deaf since birth but still became a champion in college wrestling and a successful UFC fighter.
He joined the UFC in 2007 and in doing so became their first deaf competitor.
Hamill went on to have a 21-bout career, retiring with a record of 13-8.
But his life changed forever in January 2025 after receiving hearing aides that has allowed him to hear for the first time in 41 years.
He posted a picture with his daughter and son, writing: "I just got the most powerful digital hearing aids ever made.

"For the first time in 41 years, I can finally hear my kids’ voices, the sounds of people walking and laughing.
"I finally heard my mom’s voice and she cried. I’m looking forward to hearing my brother Pat’s voice too.
"I only hope he doesn’t have a voice like a foghorn. This is awesome although I know it will take time to adapt to all of this. Happy New Year!"
Former opponent, British icon Michael Bisping, responded: "I couldn’t be happier for you @HamillHammer.

Hamill's life as a deaf athlete was depicted in the 2010 movie The Hammer - starring deaf actor Russell Harvard.
The American is the only fighter to hold a win over UFC great Jon Jones - albeit via controversial disqualification for an illegal elbow.
Hamill's last fight was a 2018 win over Chris Birchler and in retirement he moved into coaching.
