The Magician beat the late call up 6-2 and almost hit a maximum in the final frame - reaching 120 before the snooker star admitted that nerves got the better of him.

This year we will be guaranteed a new champion after reigning champ Ronnie O'Sullivan withdrew from the tournament on medical grounds. World No1 Judd Trump is on course to win a Triple Crown Grand Slam after he won the UK Championship in December.

Next up - Mark Selby vs Mark Allen

A fascinating contest in store from 7pm as Selby and Allen go head-to-head for a place in the semi-finals.

There's almost nothing to choose between this pair, who are ranked No. 4 and No. 5 in the world respectively.

Over 27 meetings, it's Mark Allen who holds the slight edge with 14 wins.

The winner of this one will take on a resurgent Shaun Murphy in the final four.

Crowd control

Mark Selby is hoping to use the Ally Pally crowd to his advantage later tonight against Mark Allen.

The three-time champion put in a masterful display to beat Ali Carter 6-1 in the last round.

Selby said: "I played in the Championship League last week and felt I was hitting the ball quite well.

"It is nice to carry it on and bring it into a tournament as big as this.

"You are only human and you can easily come out and collapse with this crowd.

"There is a lot of pressure out here."

Robbo - 'Best man won'

Despite crashing out of the Masters, Neil Robertson had nothing but admiration for Shaun Murphy's form.

The Aussie had no answers as Murphy powered his way to a 6-2 victory on Thursday afternoon.

Robertson said: "I thought both of us looked absolutely fantastic out there.

"It’s a shame because I felt brilliant. I thought I played great.

"When two players are playing really well it’s just the smallest of margins can be the difference.

"I think you just have to take your hat off to Shaun for the way he played today."

Heart breaker

Shaun Murphy branded himself an "idiot" live on TV - after blowing the chance of a 147 on his mum's birthday.

The former world champ managed to snooker himself on the blue when seemingly ready to clear in his 6-2 win over Neil Robertson.

Murphy told the BBC: "What an idiot!

"I wouldn't mind but I've done the exact same thing before, in the Welsh Open years ago. You'd think I would have learnt."

More action later from Ally Pally

Hopefully we will have another great match this evening.

Mark Allen face Mark Selby in what could be a cracker.

The bar has been set high by Shaun Wilson and Neil Robertson this afternoon, that is for sure.

Robbo feels he did little wrong

Speaking with BBC Sport after the match the Australian commented:

I thought we both played well. This is what happens when two players are playing really well. It is the smallest of margins. I think you just have to take your hat off to Shaun for how he played.

Neil Robertson

Shaun Murphy beats Neil Robertson 6-2

Murphy* 6-2 Robertson (120-0)

The tension is huge in Ally Pally as Murphy is still on for a 147.

He pots but the cue ball runs up behind the blue and snookers him on the yellow.

He cannot get his maximum but it is a match-winning break from Murphy.

Murphy* 5-2 Robertson (64-0)

Murphy is motoring towards victory in this frame.

He has played superbly today and deserves this win.

On a break of 64 currently, he is still on for a maximum.

Murphy* 5-2 Robertson (8-0)

Robertson misses a long pot and leaves Murphy an opening.

The reds are pretty bunched so he will have plenty of work to do if he is going to put himself in a frame-winning position.

Murphy 5-2 Robertson

A superb break of 82 seals the frame for Murphy.

It seems a long way back for Robertson now.

He cannot afford to drop a single frame.

Murphy 4-2 Robertson* (50-1)

Robertson immediately returns the favour in the match.

He cannot afford to let Murphy in with the way he is playing.

Currently on a break of 50, he looks set to move to within one frame of victory in this quarter-final.

Murphy 4-1 Robertson* (1-108)

A superb break of 108 from Neil Robertson.

It is the highest knock we have seen in this match so far.

He really punished Murphy for that missed black to get himself back to within two frames of his opponent.

Murphy 4-1 Robertson* (1-38)

Just as it looks like Murphy is going to put himself in another strong position, he rattles a colour to give his opponent a chance.

Robertson is still cueing well and has a great chance of closing the gap from this position.

He is currently on a break of 38 and still at the table.

Murphy* 3-1 Robertson (67-66)

What a superb clear up from Shaun Murphy.

He is looking in world-class form this afternoon.

Murphy takes the fourth frame and is within touching distance of booking his place in the semi-finals.

Murphy* 3-1 Robertson (41-66)

Well, this frame has been turned on its head.

Robertson looked certain to claw a frame back but a loose safety shot allows Murphy in once again.

He is at the table, currently on a break of 41 and looks set to clinch another frame.

Murphy 3-1 Robertson* (1-52)

Murphy misses a yellow into the middle which leaves a big chance for his opponent.

This is just what Robertson needed to get his head back in this match.

He is still at the table, currently on a break of 52.

Murphy 3-1 Robertson

You feel the next frame in this match is crucial.

Murphy seems to be living, rent free, in Robertson's head after that fluked red in the penultimate frame.

If the Englishman can take the next one, it seems a long way back for the Australian.

Murphy 3-1 Robertson

With a 76 point lead, Murphy rattles a black but his opponent concedes the frame.

They head into mid-session interval with Murphy in a position of strength.

He has punished Robertson for some loose safety shots so far.

Murphy* 2-1 Robertson (63-0)

The manner in which Robertson lost that last frame seems to have rattled him.

As he looks to play a safety shot, he sends the cue ball into the pocket.

Murphy is clinical this afternoon and is currently on a break of 59.

Murphy* 2-1 Robertson (60-24)

With just the single red remaining, Murphy goes to play it safe and flukes a double into the top corner pocket.

That seals the frame in a manner that will frustrate Robertson.

Murphy heads into the lead in this match.

Murphy* 1-1 Robertson (60-16)

A break of 49 means that Robertson needs snookers in this frame.

It will be an exchange of safety play now until he forces his opponent to concede you would think.

These are two evenly matched players, both seeming to have their eye in this afternoon.

Murphy* 1-1 Robertson (39-16)

This is proving to be a tight frame between the pair.

Murphy now has a chance to put himself in a position of strength in this frame with open reds available.

It is his frame to lose now.

Murphy* 1-1 Robertson (11-16)

After playing a tight snooker behind the gree, Murphy misses the reds and strikes the black to give away a foul.

Robertson asks him to play again but he plays it a little too soft and fouls again.

He had the line right but just not enough pace in it.

Third time lucky for Murphy as he just touches the red against the cushion.

Murphy* 1-1 Robertson (11-1)

Groans from the crowd as Murphy misses a simple red.

But the same crowd erupt a few minutes later after he finishes off an ultimate pot yourself out of trouble shot.

Murphy annihilates a diagonal red into right corner! A green follows, and bit by bit he's parlaying this situation into a chance.
