Huge Grand National rule change confirmed for this year – after previously being branded ‘crazy’

A HUGE Grand National rule change has been confirmed for this year.

Reserves will now once again be allowed to run in the world's most famous race when it is held on April 5.

They were blocked from competing two years ago - in a move called 'crazy' by some - due to complications over technology.

Bosses reduced the number of runners from 40 to 34 as part of a series of sweeping changes to the £1million contest.

But chiefs are now satisfied the smaller field has led to a safer running - and the reintroduction of reserves.

Previously, any horse who made it into the race as a reserve had to take the racecard number of the horse they had replaced.

This led to confusion because, in theory, a horse who was bottom of the weights could occupy the place and number of one near the top - an issue raised by bookies and the BHA.

According to the Racing Post, the technology used at the time 'could not cope with horses numbered higher than 40'.

But the new-look race with a smaller field means the 40 number will never be exceeded.

Jockey Club Head of Racing Jon Pullin said: "We consistently monitor and evaluate every aspect of the Randox Grand National Festival to ensure its continued success.

"After review, we have decided to reintroduce the reserves system for the Randox Grand National from 2025.

"In 2023 we announced several changes to the race, one of which being the reduction of field size from 40 to 34.

"As a result of this, some complications once faced around accommodating runners numbered beyond 40 are no longer so much of an issue."

Last year's race was won by Willie Mullins' I Am Maximus, the Irish Grand National winner sent off 7-1 joint-favourite.
