Porto’s president forced to apologise after fans chant ‘I wish Benfica had been on Chapecoense’s plane’ during HANDBALL match

Fans of Portuguese side directed sick song at rivals during the game on Wednesday, with club forced to quickly make amends

PORTO'S president has apologised for his club's fans after they chanted a sick song wishing rivals Benfica had been on board the Chapecoense plane that crashed in Colombia.

Some Porto fans chanted 'I wish Benfica had been on Chapecoense's plane' during a handball match against Benfica on Wednesday, according to AP.

In a letter provided by the club to The Associated Press, Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa wrote to Chapecoense to apologise for 'the insulting chants'.

Pinto da Costa added that Porto would like to help the Brazilian club rebuild from the November 2016 crash that took the lives of most of its team.

The crash in Colombia killed 71 of 77 people on board, including 19 Chapecoense players.

Porto won the match on Wednesday and lead the Portuguese handball league.

Chapecoense recently made their emotional return to football, with two wins form their last three games - against Zulia, Lanus and Atletico Nacional.

Meanwhile, Diego Costa, David De Gea, Fernando Torres and a host of world-famous footballers have signed shirts for auction to support the widows of the tragic Chapecoense victims.

The money raised will go straight to supporting the widows of those who tragically lost their lives in the Colombia plane crash last year.
