Masters 2025 LIVE RESULTS: Rory McIlroy in tears after FINALLY winning at Augusta but Scheffler branded ‘classless’

RORY McILROY fell to his knees and later broke down in tears after he FINALLY WON the Masters and got his hands on the prestigious Green Jacket.

After what has been more than a decade of heartbreak at Augusta, Rory won the Masters title to complete the Grand Slam and cement himself as one of the elites.

He had to do it the hard way after going to a play-off with Ryder Cup team-mate Justin Rose, as McIlroy had missed a five footer for par on the 72nd green.

But the golfing great held his nerve to win that elusive Masters crown before later breaking down in tears during a TV interview.

  • Rory tipped for more

Rory McIlroy has been tipped to DOUBLE his haul of Majors, after his fifth triumph saw him complete the career Grand Slam.

McIlroy, 35, ended an eleven-year drought in the Majours with his play-off victory over Justin Rose at the Masters, and became only the sixth player to win all four of them.

And his putting coach, Brad Faxon – one of the men credited with making McIlroy a big winner again – said there will be plenty more to come.

Former Ryder Cup star Faxon commented: “There is nothing that can stop this guy.

“He can double his number of Majors. He can go on to win ten.

“Something happened from the defeats he suffered before this victory to build the resilience he has.

“It give you something inside you, the stuff  you need to overcome adversity.

“He is an example to everyone, and I am just so proud of him. He will be 36 next month, and he has played professional golf for more than half his life now.

“But basically, he still plays for the joy of the game.

“I don’t think he measures his life based on Major championships – but there will be more to come after this.”

  • Like a Hollywood script

Sky Sports analyst Butch Harmon has gushed over Rory McIlroy’s amazing Masters trumph.

He said: “I think we saw one of the greatest days in golf we will ever see.

“It had an ebb and flow that a Hollywood producer could not have come up with. If you wrote a script like this, they would say it wasn’t believable.

“Double-bogeys, birdies, missing three-footers, hitting it in the junk. I will never forget this day. I have never seen emotion like it on a golf course.

“He was like a gladiator in the way he came back. Did he quit? No. Did he hang his head? No. Did he feel sorry for himself? No. Now he has a Green Jacket.

“I have known Rory since he was 16, done a little work with him at times, and this is one of the most amazing victories I have ever seen.”

  • McIlroy on Masters doubts

Rory McIlroy has admitted that he wondered if his time would ever come in Augusta.

After slipping into the Green Jacket, he said: “It feels incredible. This is my 17th time here, and I started to wonder if it would ever be my time?.

“I’d say it was 14 years in the making, from going out with the four-shot lead in 2011 – feeling like I could have got it done there.

“There was a lot of pent up emotion that just came out on the 18th green.

“But a moment like that makes all of the years and close calls worth it.”

  • McIlroy set for knighthood

Rory McIlroy is in line to be knighted after clinching the career Grand Slam following his dramatic triumph at the Masters, according to the Telegraph.

He already has an MBE and he could become the most prominent Northern Irish sportsman to be bestowed the accolade since AP McCoy.

He would also be the latest sportsperson to be knighted while still competing, joining the likes of Sir Andy Murray, Sir Mo Farah and Sir Lewis Hamilton.

Furthermore, the Telegraph’s report claims that the topic of a McIlroy knighthood is a matter of ‘when, not if’.

  • McIlroy’s caddie earns big prize

Rory McIlroy’s caddie Harry Diamond will receive a recording-breaking amount of prize money following their historic victory at the 2025 Masters.

Caddies have always received 10 per cent of their golfer’s winnings, which means Diamond will take home $420,000.

  • McIlroy worth £1bn says agent

Rory McIlroy’s former agent Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler believes the 35-year-old is worth more than £1billion.

He told : “Rory has got more money than Tiger Woods with all of his investments.

“He’s worth about $1.3 billion and he just acts like a normal person. I’ve never seen anybody as emotional as him. It’s nice to think that it means that much to him.

“The prize money he won doesn’t really count. It’s winning the Masters and putting his name alongside the five names: Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

“Palmer never won it and Jordan Spieth can do it next month too at the PGA Championship.”

  • Rory McIlroy photobombed

Rory McIlroy saw a heartfelt moment with his family photobombed just after winning the Masters.

After completing the career Grand Slam, McIlroy embraced his wife Erica Stoll in a hug as soon as he left the 18th green at Augusta.

However, one fan hilariously photobombed the heartwarming moment before they were joined by their four-year-old daughter, Poppy.

The fan in question was seen in the crowd next to McIlroy and Erica.

As World No.2 McIlroy hugged his partner, the fan – wearing a watch and hat – was seen leaning forwards and gesturing for a fist bump.

  • Masters star slammed

Scottie Scheffler has been slammed by golf fans for a "classless" gesture as he handed over the green jacket to Rory McIlroy.

The Northern Irishman was presented with the green jacket later on by 2024 winner Scheffler.

The American was asked to present McIlroy with the green jacket by chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club, Fred Ridley.

McIlroy, 35, and Scheffler, 28, stood up from their seats, with Scheffler then placing the jacket around the new Masters champion.

The World No.1 then placed the jacket around the World No.2, with McIlroy heard saying: "Thanks, Scottie."

After a slightly awkward presenting of the jacket with McIlroy struggling to get his right arm into the sleeve, McIlroy took a deep breath.

Ridley, 72, then said, "congratulations Rory," and extended his hand for a handshake.

McIlroy then turned around to shake his hand and replied: "Thanks, Fred."

However, after putting the jacket on McIlroy, Scheffler had quickly moved back and walked off.

Fans were not happy with the move, with one saying on social media: "That was poor from Scheffler. Didn’t even shake his hand. Put the jacket on him and walked off."

But of all 11 of those years, it's the past 12 months that have probably been the biggest rollercoaster as the Northern Irishman went from the brink of divorce to Masters champion with wife Erica Stoll by his side.

The Northern Irishman finally got his hands on the green jacket last night as he completed the Grand Slam by winning all four majors.

McIlroy burst into tears after beating Justin Rose in a decisive play-off round.

His wife Erica Stoll and four-year-old daughter Poppy joined him on the green to celebrate.

The success comes nearly a year after McIlroy filed for divorce from his partner before a shock U-turn.

In the period between the bombshell announcement and their eventual reconcile, rumours began to circulate that he had struck up a romance with CBS Sports host Balionis.

In response to McIlroy winning the Masters, she commented on a post online: "History made".

  • McIlroy's triumph compared to Tiger

Rory McIlroy's Masters triumph after years of heartaches has been compared with Tiger Woods' incredible 2019 victory.

Nick Faldo told Sky Sports: "When Tiger won here in 2019 [earning his first major title in 11 years] I said that scene would never be topped but I was wrong.

"For a man to do that after what he went through for 11 years - Rory is a legend now.

He is 35-years-old and a legend. How about that?! It is a remarkable achievement."

  • Harrington laments 'bizarre' DeChambeau decision

Padraig Harrington has called out Bryson DeChambeau after witnessing 'the most bizarre thing he has ever seen in golf' on the final round of the Masters.

He said: "What was he thinking on the third hole?

"Bryson has made his game by being a long hitter. He stands up on the third hole with a one-shot lead, possibly can drive the green, he lays up makes bogey; Rory drives it, hits driver up to the near the edge of the green and makes his birdie."

Harrington added: "It was the most bizarre change of personality I’ve ever seen in the game of golf right there in that moment…it was beyond bizarre what he did off the tee, for him in his personality. He didn’t hit a shot afterwards.

"He has different skills but his ego has gone down this road of being a long hitter and he had a chance right there on the third hole, stand up there, burst one down there, it’s a big enough area and he just gave all the momentum back to Rory."

  • Rose is 'proud' despite hurtful 2nd place

Justin Rose is proud of his display and has reason for optimism after taking Rory McIlroy to a play-off.

He said: "The past two majors I've played I've finished in second place, and it's more evidence that I'm doing some really good work.

"At Royal Troon and again here at the Masters, when it gets to the real business end I feel like I'm really calm and ready for it, which again I'm proud of but it does hurt.

"There is not anything I could have done more," said Rose, who was also beaten in a play-off for the 2017 title by Sergio Garcia.

"The only thing I can point to was back nine [on Saturday] with the putter where I let a few too many get away easily.

"I felt starting the day seven back was going to cost me in the sense that I felt a little bit too far back.

"I'm proud of myself, I played great golf and I flipped the switch.

"I didn't let that momentum from Saturday seep into Sunday and from a professionalism point of view I'm very proud of that."
