Although none of us really need to look at the table to discover this, it is now official. This is Manchester United’s worst ever Premier League team. A thoroughly-deserved 14th loss of the season - equalling last season’s record number of defeats - means this lamentable team cannot reach 58 points, which was their lowest ever tally from three seasons ago.
Charlie WyettMurphy's moments of magic
Jacob Murphy is showing himself to be one of the most creative forwards in the Premier League,
The 30-year-old recorded two assists at Leicester on Monday, and then set up Harvey Barnes for another on Sunday afternoon.
In doing so, Murphy has become the first Newcastle player to reach 10 open play Premier League assists in a season since Laurent Robert in 2001-02 (11).
Tindall: It was hard without Howe
Jason Tindall admitted that it had been a difficult week without Eddie Howe by his side.
The Newcastle assistant was without his long-term boss after the manager was admitted to hospital last week.
In Howe's absence, Tindall took charge of the team and they produced a scintillating display and victory that he hoped would have his gaffer smiling from his sick bed.
Eddie and I have worked together for 17 years, and in that time he's never missed more than a day or two so he must have found it hard this week. We went out and delivered a performance he would be proud of. Hopefully he is back very soon.

Barnes back to his best
It's been some week for Harvey Barnes,
The Newcastle winger bagged his first goal of 2025 in Monday night's win at former club Leicester, and today struck his first Premier League double in over a year with his only two shots against Manchester United.
Barnes has been directly involved in a goal in each of his last four league appearances - three goals and two assists - equalling the longest run of his career in the Premier League (also runs of four in January 2021 and September 2024).
United eyes on Europe
All Ruben Amorim and Bruno Fernandes wanted to talk about after defeat at St James' Park was Thursday's Europa League quarter-final second leg with Lyon.
And after 19 defeats in the Premier League this season, who can blame them?
United meet Lyon at Old Trafford after a 2-2 draw in the first leg in France - and then have a run of domestic games that even this set of Red Devils will see as winnable.
One-nil to the...
...other team.
Following today's defeat, Manchester United have now g one 1-0 down in 19 Premier League games this season.
Only 19th-placed Leicester (27), relegated Southampton (21) and Wolves (20) have conceded the first goal more often in the Premier League this season.
It’s also the joint-most games in which the Red Devils have conceded the opener in a single Premier League campaign along with 2013-14.
Bruno: We owe the fans
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes fronted up after another crushing defeat and vowed to reward the club's loyal fans.
The Portuguese playmaker admitted that criticism was all part of playing in an underperforming United team, but said they can make amends this Thursday on the European stage.
We know that it's been a tough season. Our position in the table is not where this club belongs, but unfortunately we are not getting the results. We need to look forward as we have a big game coming up, we need to clear our heads and go for it. It's easy to criticise because this club has never suffered like this. Our fans have been there all season during bad moments, today they were there at the end trying to cheer us up. Its time we give something back.
Bruno FernandesBeaten United have no defence
It's the only thing leaking more than the Old Trafford roof.
After shipping another four today, Manchester United have now conceded 48 goals in all competitions since Ruben Amorim's first game in charge.
In that time, only Southampton (59), Tottenham (53) and Leicester (53) have let in more in all competitions among Premier League clubs.
Ruben rues 'many mistakes'
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim feels his players made today's trip to Newcastle harder for themselves with a number of schoolboy errors.
Speaking after the 4-1 defeat that leaves the Red Devils languishing in 14th, the Portuguese coach highlighted the mistakes that cost his side, and the lack of hunger that saw Newcastle come out on top.
However, rather than dwelling on the defeat, Amorim was keen to turn to his attention to Thursday, and what is likely to be a season-defining Europa League quarter-final second leg with Lyon.
Many mistakes. Newcastle were stronger to the second balls. We made a lot of mistakes that made it harder to win a game. It's a little bit of everything. it's hard to point to one thing. It's really hard to win against these top teams like Newcastle. When we make mistakes to help the opponent it's even harder. Let's focus on Thursday.
Ruben AmorimToon to party like it's 1931
With today's victory, Newcastle United have secured their first league double over Manchester United since 1930-31.
Incredibly, it's been 94 years since Andy Cunningham's Magpies saw off Herbert Bamlett's Red Devils with a 4-3 success at St James' Park.
And if you thought that contest was a thriller, the reverse game at Old Trafford earlier in the campaign was even more ridiculous, finishing in a 7-4 win for Newcastle with Jackie Cape bagging himself a hat-trick.
Guimaraes dedicates win to Howe
Bruno Guimaraes played a starring role in Newcastle thumping Manchester United at St James' Park - and then afterwards paid tribute to absent manager Eddie Howe.
The Toon boss is recovering in hospital after being admitted on Friday due to illness, and his captain was keen to point out how integral he is to the club.
Guimaraes, who scored Newcastle's fourth goal, revealed the players had spoken about putting in a strong performance for Howe, and hoped that the landmark win would give him something to smile about.
When we went to the pitch we said we were going to play for him. He has been a huge part of our success and has been unbelievable for us, we missed him on the training ground this week. Hopefully this win will give him a bit of happiness and hopefully we'll see him back for the next game.
Bruno GuimaraesMatch stats from St James' Park

Newcastle go forth!
Four goals, a fourth win in succession, and now fourth in the Premier League. The Toon are flying right now, and you wouldn't bet against them taking over in third from Nottingham Forest in the coming weeks.
Sandro Tonali's spectacular opener, a gift for Bruno Guimaraes and a double from Harvey Barnes earned Newcastle a memorable victory that will be a welcome tonic for their manager Eddie Howe, who is currently recovering in hospital.

Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton head off to a standing ovation, and here's a brief chance for Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley to shine.
Joelinton is still angry with someone, mind, and has to be dragged to the safety of the Newcastle dugout by both Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones.

Meanwhile, Joelinton is threatening to scrap with the Manchester United midfield, and so it looks as though Jason Tindall is going to do the smart thing and take him off.

77. Anything Andre Onana can do, Altay Bayindir can have a pretty good go at himself.
In attempting to clip out a pass from his own area and into midfield, the goalkeeper played the ball straight to Joelinton.
A quick reactionary header from the Brazilian played it into the path of Bruno Guimaraes, and there was no way the Newcastle captain was passing this up.
One slick finish later, and the Gallowgate End are celebrating another goal, and another fine home victory.
And any hope the Bayindir had of keeping the number one spot long term may have just disappeared.
