Middlesbrough narrow manager shortlist down to two in Garry Monk and Nigel Pearson

Both applicants have had meetings with chairman Steve Gibson and now face the wait of his decision

MIDDLESBROUGH have narrowed their manager shortlist down to two in Garry Monk and Nigel Pearson.

The recently-relegated Championship side are looking for a permanent boss having opted against keeping Steve Agnew at the helm.

Both managers want the position and have held interviews with chairman Steve Gibson.

According to the , Gibson wanted each boss to present their long-term plans for the club which includes scouting, backroom staff and the academy.

Gibson will now take time to weigh up each manager before making an official appointment.

Monk is currently the bookies' favourite to be in charge by the first match of next season and it is thought he will bring James Beattie as his assistant.

The former Swansea boss guided Leeds to seventh in the Championship last season before resigning from his post in May.

Pearson has been out of work after leaving Derby last October following a disastrous stint which involved a reported bust-up with owner Mel Morris.

Gibson will be expecting their new manager to guide them back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
