MANCHESTER CITY have been knocked back in their pursuit of Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy.
Pep Guardiola's side launched a £44.5million bid for his main transfer target but the French champions want the same £50m figure the club paid for Kyle Walker.
The French champions are in no hurry to sell one of their key assets having already lost the likes of Tiemoue Bakayoko to Chelsea.
And they plan to drive a hard bargain with Man City because they are confident the mega-rich side will stump up the extra cash.
Walker become one of the most expensive defenders in history when he completed his switch to the Etihad earlier this month.
With Mendy four years younger than the the former Tottenham man and the French champions feel he should be valued around the same figure.
But City still remain confident of landing his signature ahead of the new season.
The 22-year-old left-back was left out of Monaco's pre-season squad that travelled to Switzerland fuelling speculation that Man City were closing in on a deal.
