Despite winning eight major honours since his tenure in 2014, Barcelona has considerably fallen behind league rivals Real Madrid in recent seasons.

This summer he has been slated for the handing of transfers with the sale of Neymar to PSG and the additions at Nou Camp deemed as underwhelming.

The circus surrounding their pursuit of Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho added more frustration to the Barcelona fans.

But Bartomeu's reputation at Barcelona was already tainted following an investigation  of alleged tax fraud over the arrival of Neymar in 2013.

Benedito, who ran for club president in 2010 and 2015, said the allegations were worthy of immediate resignation as well the detainment of his friend and successor Sandro Rosell for money laundering and the club's possible links to Qatar.

The Catalan club have five working days to facilitate the papers then 14 working days to gather the signatures of 15 per cent of the club's members, which is around 16,000 people.

If the vote carries on to the next stage, two-thirds of voter must go against the current board to push for a new election.
