Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho confirms Victor Lindelof will start against Basel in the Champions League
JOSE MOURINHO has stated that Victor Lindelof will start for Manchester United in Tuesday's Champions League opener against Basel.
Chris Smalling has also been confirmed in the starting XI as defensive duo Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are unavailable through suspension.
Lindelof has endured a stint on the sidelines and has made just one competitive appearance for United following his £31million summer switch from Benfica.
Despite the whopping transfer fee, the defender is yet to feature in the Premier League and looked unsettled during United's European Super Cup match against Real Madrid last month.
He travelled with the squad to Stoke, but he was the only outfield player excluded from the match squad.
During the 2-2 draw at the Britannia Stadium, Jones was at fault for both of the Stoke goals and this has allowed Lindelof the chance to break into the first-team squad.
The 22-year-old is expected to partner Smalling in the heart of the defence for Tuesday's Champions League fixture against the Swiss side.
United's first-choice defensive pair, Bailly and Jones, are both suspended for the midweek match.
Following Jones' dismal display against Stoke, Mourinho said: "It is not the moment to speak, he knows the mistake.
"He doesn't need me to go in to speak with him about, so no problem.
"Mistakes are part of the game, he's playing well for us, he's probably tired after two consequent matches with the national team but he cannot play Tuesday so it is good that he gets his rest and opportunity for Lindelof and Smalling to play a Champions League match."
The summer transfer window was one the craziest we have ever seen.
