Wayne Rooney returns to Manchester United to a hero’s welcome ahead of Everton match up

The former United star stepped back on to his old stopping grounds and was welcomed with open arms by fans as he prepares to face his former team

WAYNE ROONEY walked off the Everton team coach to a warm welcome of applause and chants from the rival fans.

The ex-Reds forward was hit with chants of "Rooney, Rooney" as he returned to face his former club for the first time.

Rooney left to rejoin his boyhood club, Everton, this summer after a 13-year career that saw him rise to become the club's record goal scorer.

The show fans waiting with anticipation for their old star to step off the bus, when he did they erupted in a hero's welcome.

One fan responded: Deserves every bit of applause and appreciation from Man Utd fans after what he did for mufc great player.

Another said: "Did you expect anything different?"

The United fans have clearly not forgotten what he did for their team for over a decade, with his name still across many of their backs on the red shirt.

Stands outside Old Trafford also featured Rooney flags and merchandise and banners were held up inside the stadium.
