And he turned provider soon later as he teed-up substitute Alvarez seal victory within seconds of coming off the bench.

The hosts were awarded an early penalty after the ball struck Franck Kessie on the arm.

But after a furious reaction from the Milan players, the official overturned his decision using VAR.

Sampdoria's breakthrough almost came before the break as centre-back Alessio Romagnoli saw a header trickle wide after beating his own keeper.

Goalscorer Zapata said: "We deserved this victory, we fought to the end and must build on this performance.

"It's important for us to keep a clean sheet too, now we need to rest and prepare for another important match."
