Messi threaded the ball through to Suarez in the dying moments of the game, but the Uruguayan dragged the shot way wide of the woodwork.

He ripped his shirt and marched off the pitch, before heading into the dressing room ahead of the final whistle.

Suarez was also booked just before the hour mark for diving.

The former Liverpool ace scored 37 times in 51 outings last year, but has only managed two so far this season.

Despite an empty stadium and a sulking striker, Ernesto Valverde's side prevailed in sublime style on the pitch.

Sergio Busquets broke the deadlock for the home side, followed by Messi with two goals in the last 20 minutes.

He will have refind his form in front of goal as Barca face title-chasing Atletico Madrid after the international break.

The fixture took place behind closed doors amid violent disturbances during the Catalonia independence referendum.

Barcelona pleaded for the game to be postponed, but their request was denied.

On the day when violence and police brutality occurred in Catalonia, the club decided not to let 98,000 fans in.
