But Hamilton could find himself in real battle this weekend after losing the rear of his car through Turn 6 during the first lap of Qualifying.

It means the Brit will start his race in Sao Paulo at the back of the grid.

And Mercedes chiefs are sure to be sweating as they look to pip Ferrari to yet another GP win.

Their hopes now rest with Valtteri Bottas, who could be in a straight shootout with Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen for top spot.

Hamilton's sensational crash piles on the misery for Mercedes, who were the victims of a robbery when their staff bus was held at gun point in Brazil.

Hamilton revealed: "Some of my team were held up at gunpoint last night. Gun shots fired, gun held at one's head.

"This is so upsetting to hear. This happens every single year here, F1 and the teams need to do more."

Meanwhile, Hamilton is also under fire for avoiding £3.3million-worth of tax on a £16.5m private jet.
