The 22-year-old earns £130,000-a-week, around £7m-a-year, under the terms of his current contract.

A number of clubs in the Premier League and Europe are interested in signing him, including Newcastle.

But Shaw knows he will not get the same wage packet elsewhere, and wants a settlement from the Red Devils.

Rafa Benitez launched an enquiry for the left-back last week, to help boost his side's Premier League survival hopes.

But the Toon were put off with United's £20m asking price, as they battle to claim back the £30m they paid Saints for him.

It is thought United are willing to pay Shaw around £2m in a severance package to get him off their books.

"The club have one figure in mind while he has another for severance pay. They are way off of each other.

"He wants to get his career moving again, but he is not going to do United a favour if they do try to force him to leave."
