A spokesman for Golden Boy promotions told ESPN Deportes: "Yes, they operated on Canelo Alvarez, but it was cosmetic, there are no more details."

But the Mexican star insists that the procedure was a necessary one after a problem with his right knee.

Canelo said: "I want to share with you that today that I had to undergo a arthroscopic surgery to repair the internal femoral cartilage and to eliminate a fold in my right knee.

"I dismiss the erroneous information published by Golden Boy president Eric Gomez.
