LEGENDARY boxing coach Brenden Ingle has passed away at the age of 77.

The iconic Irish trainer coached four world boxing champions at his gym in Wincobank, Sheffield. Here’s more about the legend.

Who was Brendan Ingle?

Brendan was born in Dublin in 1940.

He moved to England when he was 18 and went on to become a professional boxer, with 19 wins and 14 losses on his record.

Based in Sheffield, he was responsible for guiding the careers of world champions Prince Naseem Hamed and Johnny Nelson.

In total he trained four world champions, six European, 15 British and six Commonwealth champions making him one of the most successful trainers to ever grace the sport.

How did he die?

Brendan passed away peacefully at 7.40am at the Royal Hallamshire hospital on Friday, May 25 2018.

He was 77 years old.

Johnny Nelson wrote on Instagram: “On this one occasion I am using social media to inform people a good, good man has left this earth today.

“A good friend. A good father figure. And the best trainer in the world.”

Who are his sons and what is St Thomas’ Boys and Girls Club?

Brendan had two sons, Dominic and John, who helped him run his own boxing club – St Thomas’ Boys and Girls Club in Sheffield’s Wincobank.

The boxing gym has been labelled as Britain’s most prolific conveyor belt of champions.

Ingle set up his gym in the Steel City as a place for young people who were “running wild” to have somewhere to go but he quickly earned a reputation as one of the country’s best trainers.

Ingle was awarded an MBE in 1998 for his services and contributions to British boxing and his work with young people in the Sheffield area.
