Cahill's contract at Stamford Bridge ends then, and looks very unlikely he'll be offered a new deal.

However, they face competition from Premier League outfit Watford who are said to be closely monitoring the ex-Bolton defender's situation ahead of a potential summer move.

Bruce's attentions have turned to Cahill - who was on Villa's books between 2004 and 2008 - after missing out on signing ex-Blues skipper Terry.

The 37-year-old was outstanding for the Villans last season as they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

Steve Bruce has been desperate to get the ex-England defender back to Villa on another short-term deal, however that now looks unlikely with Terry's eyes firmly set on a career in management.

He turned down a move to Spartak Moscow for 'family reasons', but has previously indicated he wanted to continue playing.

However, with his close friend Frank Lampard in charge at Derby and ex-international team-mate Steven Gerrard holding the reins at Rangers, his appetite to get into coaching has intensified.

The veteran defender is currently back at Chelsea's Cobham training base coaching the club’s younger players.

He said on the interest from Villa: "I'm still undecided what I'm doing next.

"My end game is to be a manager and that's what I'm working towards with the younger boys here."
