IT WAS a day to forget for Crystal Palace's Mamadou Sakho at Selhurst Park - as he provided the miss of the season so far!

The Eagles played out a dull goalless draw with Newcastle, but it could have been a lot different had Sakho taken advantage of the easiest opportunity he'll probably ever get to score a goal.

The scene was set for the 28-year-old to grab the headlines with a late winner.

With the Eagles on the attack down the left wing, Sakho ghosted into the box at the back post.

After Andros Townsend had brilliantly kept the ball in, he swung an inviting cross towards the defender.

With Martin Dubravka in no-mans land all the defender had to do was direct his header into an open net as the clock turned 82 minutes.

Unfortunately for Roy Hodgson and co he couldn't do that though - directing the ball wide - with the Frenchman reacting in disbelief at what had just happened.

It would have been a second goal in blue and red for Sakho - whose last found the net in a 2-1 victory over Stoke in November 2017.

The result leaves Hodgson's men 11th with seven points taken from six matches so far, while Newcastle continue to struggle and lie third bottom.

Next up for Palace is a trip to recently relegated West Brom in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.
