Declan Rice not included in Republic of Ireland squad as he stews over whether to switch allegiance to England
Martin O'Neill says he remains 'hopeful' the West Ham defender-turned-midfielder opts for green and not white
DECLAN RICE has been left out of the Republic of Ireland squad as he considers switching allegiance to England.
The 19-year-old has been approached by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate after some fine performances of late for West Ham.
Rice has been deployed by the Hammers in a midfield spot - and has helped turn around the club's fortunes after a dismal start.
Despite collecting three caps for Ireland in friendlies, he can choose to switch allegiances.
It has led to Ireland boss Martin O'Neill omitting him from the squad for their Uefa Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales.
O'Neill still hopes Rice will opt to remain with Ireland.
He said: "I've spoken to Declan and the family. They want a little bit more time to make his mind up
"He hasn't made a decision yet. I am hopeful."
Reports later emerged claiming Rice was set to switch his allegiance to England, with suggestions plans were in place to lodge the relevant paperwork with world governing body Fifa.

Following his press conference, O'Neill told journalists he remained "hopeful" over Rice's situation.
He added: "Until I get the story I can't really comment on it. All I can reiterate is what I've said in the room for the last hour. What I said to you was exactly how I felt about it.
"Nothing surprises me in this life, but I'd be a bit surprised at that particular story."
