It's United's worst start to a season for 29 years - as they sit tenth in the Premier League and already nine points behind Manchester City and Liverpool.

United icon Scholes has been a vocal critic of the ex-Chelsea boss - who he says is "embarrassing the club" and lucky to still be in charge.

However, Scholes is in agreement with his ex-United team-mate Ryan Giggs that Mourinho - who gave a press conference lasting less than four minutes this morning - deserves more time to turn around the perilous situation at Old Trafford.

He told : "Yes I do (think he should stay).

"I'm sick of him moaning about what he hasn't got though, when I think he really should be concentrating on what he has got.

"I think he's got some really good quality in the squad who are really low on confidence.

"Now Jose over the years has been a really brilliant coach - his record suggests that - he's been one of the very best.

"Now I'd like to see him stay and show us what a good coach he is.

"It's probably the biggest challenge of his career so far."
