Faria has been by Mourinho’s side since 2001, working as part of the coaching staff at Uniao Leiria, Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Man Utd.

And now have Faria as odds-on favourite at 2/1 – after he left Manchester United this year to take a break from football.

The bookies have also received a lot of money on David Moyes to replace Steve Bruce as his odds have been slashed from 50/1 to 7/1 this morning.

Dean Smith is now second favourite 2/1 after impressing as Brentford boss.

Betfair Spokesperson Katie Baylis said: “The odds for who will take over at Villa have been chopping and changing by the hour.

“While Thierry Henry was as short as 1/5 yesterday for the job he’s now out to 33/1 with talk he could be in line to take over from Leonardo Jardim at Monaco.

“Terry’s odds then went as short as 5/4 this morning, but he’s back out to 14/1, with the big favourite now Rui Faria who is gone odds-on at 1/2 from 7/1 yesterday, with Dean Smith the 2/1 second favourite.”
