Barcelona eye swoop for Tottenham star Eric Dier after impressing in England’s win over Spain
Dier, 24, is contracted to Tottenham until the summer of 2021 - but Barcelona are prepared to play the waiting game
BARCELONA are keeping tabs on Tottenham utility man Eric Dier ahead of a shock summer move, according to reports.
TEAMtalk claim that the Catalan giants’ hierarchy have instructed their scouts to keep a close eye on the Spurs man.
Dier, who can operate in defence and midfield, was superb in England’s recent Nations League win over Spain, outclassing his opposite number Sergio Busquets in the middle of the park.
Barca want cover in the aforementioned areas, and have already signalled their intent to try and strengthen their centre-half options in January when the transfer window reopens.
The LaLiga giants have Ajax’s Matthijs De Ligt in their sights, as well as Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren and Dier’s club team-mate Toby Alderweireld.
However, TEAMtalk insist that there is now a growing feeling within Barcelona that Dier could be the perfect choice for cover in central defence and central midfield – and they’ll continue to monitor the situation over the coming months.
The ex-Sporting Lisbon man is contracted to Tottenham until the summer of 2021, so he wouldn’t come on the cheap.
Barca are prepared to play the waiting game with Dier though, as they first look to land one of their other defensive targets in January.
Dier has been an ever-present for Mauricio Pochettino’s men this season, notching one goal in the process.
