GONZALO HIGUAIN is leading the bookies market to be Chelsea's next star striker.

The Blues' desperation to sign a striker this month was justified after they missed a forward's presence in the defeat to Spurs.

Maurizio Sarri is not convinced by the qualities of Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud which has led to him looking to strengthen his attacking options in the January transfer window.

Higuain is believed to be their No 1 target and the AC Milan ace on loan from Juventus is odds-on at 2/9 to make the switch to Stamford Bridge.

Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson is second favourite at 6/5 after a prolific season on the south coast with 11 goals this term.

While Mauro Icardi, Wilfried Zaha and Marko Arnautovic are also being heavily linked by the bookies.

Spokesman said: “Chelsea’s need for a striker looked even more apparent than usual against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup last night.

“And before you mention Morata, he doesn’t count. We’ve seen a rush of money this morning on Higuain, making him now odds-on to be signed this month.

“Wilson is also popular, following Solanke’s move to Bournemouth. It could be a matter of urgency, though, with Chelsea keen to cling on to top four.”
