PSG had told Ajax they were keen to make De Jong the second-most costly Dutchman of all time but the move hit a snag when the youngster denied he had agreed to join.

, the £67m deal is now complete and it will see De Jong earn £7m per season on a five-year contract with the French champions.

It is expected that De Jong's agent, Ali Dursun, will arrive in Paris in the coming days to thrash out the final details before the midfielder pens an agreement.

City were among the favourites to secure his highly-sought after signature, but Kylian Mbappe had urged boss Thomas Tuchel to push the board to sign the playmaker.

"Maybe I'll stay for another year, maybe I'll leave. I'm not sure."

A defensive midfielder is top of Guardiola’s wish-list this summer with Ruben Neves, Tanguy Ndombele, Houssem Aouar and Declan Rice also in the frame.

Pep did state that Manchester City will not be held to ransom over Wolves' Portuguese maestro after reports revealed Nuno Espirito Santo's side will demand £100m.

He said: "There are many clubs in the world, many holding midfielders in the world, and most can play here.

"That’s not the point — most of them are under contracts.

"A month ago, I started reading ‘Ruben Neves, £100m’. That’s not going to happen, we are not going to pay £100m for a holding midfielder."

De Jong becomes the latest in a long line of top players to ditch Ajax in favour of more lucrative deals elsewhere.

And ever since their Champions League triumph in 1995, the Amsterdam outfit have long been known as Europe's premier selling club.

His team-mate Matthijs de Ligt, 19, has also been tipped for a big-money move abroad, possibly to the Premier League.
