WWE have confirmed the legendary John Cena is out of tonight’s Royal Rumble.
The 41-year-old wrestling icon and Hollywood movie star has been ruled out of the famous spectacular due to injury.
Speculation has been rife the veteran, who only returned to WWE last month, was struggling to make the over-the-top-rope extravaganza after suffering a blow to his ankle a fortnight ago.
Now the company’s website have announced the rumours were true.
A WWE statement said: “John Cena will not compete in the Men's Royal Rumble Match tonight due to his ankle injury.
“Cena first sustained the left ankle injury during the main event of the Jan. 14 episode of Raw.
“In that match, the 16-time World Champion faced Finn Balor, Baron Corbin and Drew McIntyre for the right to challenge Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at the WWE Royal Rumble event.”
It continued: “The injury occurred when McIntyre trapped Cena in the ankle lock submission hold. Cena then appears to favour his left ankle while leaving the ring after Raw went off the air.

“The Cenation Leader was unable to sufficiently recover in time for tonight's 30-Man Royal Rumble Match, and has been ruled out of the bout as a result.”
Cena is currently tied with hall of famer Ric Flair on 16 world title reigns.

He was hoping to surpass that feat by winning tonight’s Royal Rumble to earn a championship shot of his choosing at WrestleMania 35.
Cena took a long hiatus from the ring in 2018 to focus on his blossoming movie career.
Since he was defeated by The Undertaker at WrestleMania 34, Cena has has rarely appeared in the ring.
He took on a part-time role to film Project X-traction opposite legendary martial artist Jackie Chan. in China.
Cena has also starred in movies such as Blockers, Trainwreck and Daddy’s Home 1 and 2 and his recently-released Bumblebee.
