"TIN-POT" Scotland were mercilessly trolled with endless Borat jokes after losing 3-0 down to lowly Kazakhstan, a team who are ranked 117 in the world.

France '98 was the last time the Scots participated in the finals of an international competition, but the Tartan Army had reasons to be positive after winning Uefa Nations League promotion.

However, early strikes from Yuriy Pertsukh and Yan Vorogovskiy put the home side into a shock lead before Baktiyar Zaynutdinov sealed a historic win for Kazakhstan.

The country, perhaps most famous in Scotland for Sacha Baron Cohen's portrayal of film icon Borat, are ranked 67 places lower than in Fifa's world rankings.

Kazakhstan also won zero of 10 matches during qualification for the last World Cup and fans online weren't in hurry to let the visitors forget this latest embarrassment.

Five of the worst defeats in Scottish football history

  • Israel 2-1 Scotland, 2018
  • USA 5-1 Scotland, 2012
  • Norway 4-0 Scotland, 2009
  • Scotland 0-3 Hungary, 2004
  • Scotland 0- 7 Uruguay, 1954 World Cup finals

One fan wrote: "Scotland fans using "we’ve a guaranteed playoff spot anyway", you are literally losing 3-0 to a country most famous for a bloke called Borat."

Twitter user Mark agreed with that post, writing: "Ay Scotland are getting beat by Kazakhstan 3-0 right now! That place Borat is from."

Another posted: "Scotland having their pants pulled down of 11 Borat’s here," while someone else tweeted: "As if Borat is beating Scotland. Tinpot."

Scotland will have captain Andy Roberston back in contention against San Marino, which may have its own case for worst ever defeat should Alex McLeish's side stumble again.
