Formula E: Brit Oliver Rowland clinches maiden pole position for Sanya ePrix
Nissan star was the standout performer but his teammate Sebastien Buemi crashed out
BRIT OLIVER ROWLAND grabbed his first pole position in Formula E ahead of the Sanya ePrix.
The Nissan driver was the star of super pole which is a showdown of the six fastest drivers from four qualifying groups.
Rowland said: "I am a rookie so it helps coming to a track that nobody knows.
"We are starting out on the front so hopefully we can stay out of trouble.
He added:"I feel in a really good rhythm at the moment.
"Three super poles in a row and now my first pole, hopefully I can keep pushing and keep getting good results and hopefully I will be fighting for the win."
His teammate and former champion Sebastian Buemi crashed out of the session in bizarre circumstances - which saw him replicate the same accident which happened in a previous practice session.
The Swiss driver locked up and skidded over the tyre marks which he left on the track earlier in the day before hitting the same barrier again, which had been repaired with tape after his initial incident.
But Buemi will start fifth ahead of Brit Alexander Sims who did not even go out in super pole after a technical issue.
The BMW driver was wheeled out of the pits but was quickly rolled back into the garage after the car failed to get into gear.
Defending champion Jean-Eric Vergne will also start on the front row after a difficult start to the season.
Meanwhile Daniel Abt will start fourth after being the first driver out in super pole.
Brit Sam Bird will begin in 16th after being the victim of being the first driver out on a dirty track.
