The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion said he is ending his career at the age of 30 so he can concentrate on a “new venture”.

He tweeted: “Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as ‘Mixed Martial Art’ today.

“I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement. Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!”

Now UFC president White has given his reaction to the surprising news via text message to .

'TOTALLY MAKES SENSE'

And with McGregor’s massive success away from the octagon, White believes it “makes sense”.

He said: “He has the money to retire and his Whiskey is KILLIN it. It totally makes sense. If I was him I would retire too.

“He’s retiring from fighting, not from working. The Whiskey will keep him busy and I’m sure he has other things he’s working on.

“He has been so fun to watch!!! He has accomplished incredible things in the sport.

“I am so happy for him and I look forward to seeing him be as successful outside of the octagon as he was in it.”

'ONLY ONE KING'

McGregor, worth around £76m, is currently suspended from fighting by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after UFC 229, in which he was involved in a huge post-fight brawl after losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

And his Russian nemesis could not resist trolling the Irishman after learning of his retirement.

He tweeted: “There can be only one king in the jungle.”

The explosive and wild scenes at UFC 229 prompted much talk about McGregor having a rematch against the unbeaten lightweight champion later this year.

Notorious was also linked with possible fights against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and a bumper trilogy clash with Nate Diaz.

But those plans have now been shelved after he announced his decision to quit to his 7.5m Twitters followers.
