WWE legend X-Pac says CM Punk ‘will be back’ in wrestling… but with AEW

Much-loved superstar shocked wrestling fans last weekend by returning to the ring with a surprise attack at an independent show

WWE legend Sean Waltman has no doubts CM Punk will return full-time to wrestling – but not for Vince McMahon.

Instead the man better known as X-Pac believes “The Best In The World” will end up with rival promotion All Elite Wrestling.

Punk, 40, left McMahon's company in 2014 amid a bitter row with management before unsuccessfully failing to make an impact in the UFC.

But the much-loved superstar, real name Phil Brooks, shocked fans by making an unadvertised appearance at MKE Wrestling’s event in Wisconsin despite his supposed retirement last weekend.

PUNK'S SURPRISE

The former MMA fighter and WWE champion interfered during the Ace Steel vs. Daryck St. Holmes match, to perform his famous GTS on the latter before quickly exiting the building.

That surprise has left the WWE Universe wondering whether Punk, who previously vowed never to come back, would consider relenting on his decision.

Waltman discussed that possibility on his latest and declared his confidence that Punk would once again step inside the squared-circle.

Waltman said: “‘I’m never coming back to wrestling.’ I mean he said that over and over again. History tells me that eventually, he will return to wrestling. A lot of people in entertainment that mean it just as much as he does eventually come back.

“Trust me he will be back, I promise you at some point CM Punk will be back involved in wrestling.

“And no one should go like ‘oh see we told you’ cause it’s his life. And at the time he means it when he said ‘I am never coming back’ he means it.

“It’s just that history shows that everyone who meant it too comes back.”

'WAITING TO DROP'

But Waltman cannot see him returning with WWE, instead he thinks it will be for the Shaid Khan-backed AEW instead.

The 46-year-old added: “I can honestly see him showing up in AEW.

“That could be like this huge surprise that they’re waiting to drop with the announcement of a TV.”

AEW previously tried to tempt Punk back into the ring earlier this year after his unsuccessful stint as a UFC fighter.

He lost by submission on his octagon debut to Mickey Gall back in 2016 but not to be deterred, the former WWE champion made another attempt to crack it inside the cage.

However, he lost via unanimous decision after suffering a brutal beating at the hands of Mike Jackson at UFC 225 last June in his hometown of Chicago.

UFC president Dana White said after that loss Punk would probably not fight for the organisation again.

With tensions still high with WWE brass, Punk then signed a deal with Cage Fury Fighting Championships, a UFC affiliate, as a commentator – covering his first event in December.

That appeared to mark the end of his competitive career as he looked to be taking a break from the fight game.
