Tottenham legend Rafael van der Vaart wins first pro darts match.. despite officials getting score wrong
The former Holland star began a new sporting chapter at the BDO Denmark Open but a mix-up with the scoreboard could have handed victory to his opponent
RAFAEL VAN DER VAART has won his first official match as a darts player – even though the tournament officials got his score wrong!
The former Holland, Tottenham, Real Madrid and Ajax star began a new sporting chapter with a 4-2 victory over Dane
Thomas Anderson in the first round at the BDO Denmark Open at the Granly Hockey Arena in Esbjerg.
However, the scoreboard was not available on the worldwide live stream for the opening legs.
When it did eventually appear, it had Anderson incorrectly leading 3-1, before switching back to the correct scoreline of 3-1 to the Dutchman.
The Danish commentator said: “I have to apologise for the scoreboard and the fact it is not working. We hope to get it up as soon as possible.”
Van der Vaart, wearing white trainers and a black tracksuit, played some solid darts and was serenaded by some of the crowd when he stepped on to the oche.
The 36-year-old, watched by his wife and young child, will play Danish international Mogens Christensen in the second round.
The TV commentator praised his display, saying: “I have been surprised by how good Rafael van der Vaart has played in moments.
“He has played some solid darts and has hit a couple of 100-plus scores.
“If he goes on to win this tournament, it would be one of the biggest upsets in the history of the world of darts!”
