How did Manchester City win the treble?

2019 EFL Cup final

Manchester City took on Chelsea at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final in February.

The game finished 0-0 after extra time and went to penalties.

Jorginho and David Luiz both missed penalties for Chelsea which meant City lifted their first trophy of the season.

The game saw controversy when Kepa Arrizabalaga appeared to refuse to come off when Chelsea boss Maurizo Sarri tried to substitute him but after the game, both player and manager said that the situation was a 'misunderstanding' and Sarri believed Arrizabalaga was too injured to continue.

City's penalty takers:

  • Ilkay Gundogan - YES
  • Sergio Aguero - YES
  • Leroy Sane - NO
  • Bernardo Silva - YES
  • Raheem Sterling - YES

2018-19 Premier League

Defending champions Manchester City won their fourth Premier League title on the last day of the season.

Pep Guardiola's side and Liverpool had been fighting it out all season for the trophy but it was City who finished just one point above.

They won their last 14 league games and finished on 98 points.

Manchester City key results:

  • Arsenal 0-2 Man City (August 12)
  • Man City 3-1 Man United (November 11)
  • Man City 2-1 Liverpool (January 3)
  • Man City 6-0 Chelsea (February 10)
  • Man City 1-0 Leicester (May 6)
  • Brighton 1-4 Man City (May 12)

2019 FA Cup final

City completed the treble on Saturday, May 18.

David Silva opened the scoring after just 26 minutes before Raheem Sterling doubled their lead just 12 minutes later.

During the second half, City dominated with substitute Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus making it three and four.

Just six minutes after scoring City's fifth, Sterling scored the sixth to become only the first person to score a hat-trick in an FA Cup final since 1953 with Stan Mortensen in the Stanley Matthews final.

However after the game finished, one of Sterling's goals was given to Jesus.

The game finished 6-0 and is the joint biggest win in an FA Cup final since Bury beat Derby in 1903.

Has any other clubs come close to winning the treble?

By winning the FA Cup final, Man City made history by becoming the first men's side to win the domestic treble - Carabao Cup, Premier League and FA Cup.

Arsenal Women have won the domestic treble and a few men's sides have come close.

Manchester United, led by Sir Alex Ferguson, won a treble of Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in 1999 whilst Liverpool won the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup in 2001.
