THE Queen’s Club Championships is an annual tennis tournament held on grass courts.
It’s a prestigious event and part of the ATP World Tour 500 series and is one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world.
Where is the Queen’s Club tennis tournament?
The private tennis club is in West Kensington.
It has 28 outdoor courts and eight indoor.
It is also the national headquarters of real tennis and hosts the British Open every year.
It was founded on August 19, 1886 by Evan Charteris, George Francis and Algernon Grosvener.
While the Queen’s Club Championships is sometimes seen as a warm up for Wimbledon it is a highly-regarded event in its own right.
Andy Roddick has called the courts at the Queen's Club "arguably the best in the world".
It is named after Queen Victoria, its first patron.
Among the first sports offered by the club were real tennis, Eton Fives, rackets, lawn tennis, football, rugby and athletics.
The Lawn Tennis Association put the club up for sale in September 2005. It announced it was selling the club to its members for £45million.
Some members disputed the LTA’s right to sell the club, saying it was only held in trust by the LTA on their behalf.
In December 2006 the two sides reached an out of court settlement with the sale price being reduced to £35m.
