England World Cup win hailed as ‘The Greatest Match’ as Stephen Fry and Sir Viv Richards lead tributes
ENGLAND cricket heroes were hailed on Twitter as Stephen Fry and Sir Viv Richards lead tributes after the nation's first ever World Cup win.
The hosts became cricket world champions for the first time after defeating New Zealand in a sudden death Super Over at Lord’s.
The game was won after a dramatic Super Over - the two teams were tied but England’s 26 boundaries trumped New Zealand’s 17.
Fry labelled the game “The Greatest Match” while Sir Viv urged New Zealand to "never be down" after their razor-thin loss.
Sir Viv said: "What an amazing match of Cricket. Nail biting stuff at an iconic venue...
"This game will go down as one of the best matches in history. Congratulations to @englandcricket on your maiden @cricketworldcup title. Never be down @BLACKCAPS, you fought like champions."
Fry tweeted: "The Greatest Match. I feel for New Zealand who played so so well. Luck went England’s way, but what a great side they are. I feel sorry for those who don’t get cricket.
"They miss the most exquisite feelings of joy, agony, tension, thrill, surprise, glory and wonder."
Liverpool's James Milner, former England skipper Stuart Broad and actor Ross Kemp continued the tributes for Trevor Bayliss' men.
Former Eastenders actor Kemp said: "I don't get many opportunities in life to tweet this... but I'm going to - England world champions!"
Milner said: "Amazing finish to the World Cup! Massive congrats to England... Get in there."
Broad tweeted: "That’s the best white ball game of all time! ENGLAND ARE WORLD CUP CHAMPIONS!!"
