England warned not to rush World Cup hero Jofra Archer into Ashes team by legend Matthew Hoggard
ENGLAND have been warned not to rush Jofra Archer into their Ashes starting XI — as he might not be ready.
The World Cup star was named in Joe Root’s squad to face Australia, with the First Test starting at Edgbaston on Thursday.
But Archer, who has been suffering from a side strain, has bowled just four overs in a T20 match for Sussex since sending down the final six balls in the win over New Zealand on July 14.
And England legend Matthew Hoggard fears fans may be expecting too much from the country’s new golden boy.
Hoggard, speaking as Ashes ambassador, said: “There is a difference between bowling four overs and 24 overs in a day.
“What we have to be careful of is Jofra has not played a lot of international cricket.
“Bowling the last over in the World Cup takes some massive bottle and he came through that.

“He has that X Factor and has taken to international cricket like a duck to water.
“We still have to be very mindful he has only played a handful of games.
“To come into an Ashes Test series maybe not fully fit is going to be a big ask.”
